Who I am

Mohamed Elwaei

I'm a Computer Science graduate from the University of South Florida with a minor in Mathematics, graduating Cum Laude with a 3.69 GPA.

My experience spans systems programming, AI/ML research, and full-stack development. I've served as a Teaching Assistant for four upper-division CS courses — Data Structures in C++, Operating Systems, Software Engineering, and Computer Architecture.

I've worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in a computational biology lab that uses AI for drug discovery and genomics, and I've also contributed to a computer vision lab building CNNs and autoencoders.

Outside of tech, I volunteer with NSBE to bring STEM education to K-12 students across Tampa.

Projects

Polynomial Root Finder web GUI showing a degree-7 complex polynomial and its roots plotted on the complex plane

Parallelized Polynomial Root Finder

  • Locates every root of a complex polynomial via the argument principle: Cauchy/Fujiwara bounds establish a root-containing square, winding-number counting recursively subdivides it into quadrants, and multiplicity-aware Newton polishing refines results to machine precision.
  • Ported the winding-number counting step to CUDA, implementing and benchmarking three parallel strategies (per-cell, edge-gather, atomic-scatter) against the C++17 CPU reference, NumPy, and mpmath.
  • Built an interactive Flask + MathLive web GUI for entering complex-coefficient polynomials, switching between CPU/GPU backends, and visualizing roots on the complex plane.

Compiler for Diminished Java (DJ)

A full compiler for DJ — a Turing-complete, object-oriented language inspired by Java. Built the entire pipeline: lexical analysis, parsing, type checking, and RISC-style assembly generation with virtual method tables for dynamic dispatch.

Financial Resources Scraper

A full-stack web application that scrapes and ingests data on thousands of stocks, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies. Built with BeautifulSoup and Flask, with a clean HTML/CSS frontend.

Follower Robot — Best Robot Award

Designed and implemented a follower robot for K-12 students in Foundations of Engineering. Won best robot out of 100+ students. Led both the physical CAD design and embedded software.

C++ Arduino TinkerCAD

Pacman AI Agent

Implemented a suite of classical AI algorithms on the UC Berkeley Pacman framework, including A* search, BFS, and DFS for pathfinding, and adversarial agents using Minimax and Alpha-Beta Pruning. Extended to reinforcement learning with Value Iteration, Q-Learning, and Epsilon-Greedy exploration strategies.
